What's in the calling....

Long time ago Shakespeare said, "What's in the name?" Changing this expression a bit I want to say, "What's in the calling!" But in my experience lots of things depend upon what people call you. I am just stating my experiences. No offence intended. I will not be responsible if I touch any sour part or hurt anybody's ego! (This I must write in the end of this post in very small letters... But that is against my values!)

So I was saying, how do you react if someone, to be precise 'a shopkeeper' or 'a college student' (not so young than you) or your 'colleague' call you uncle or aunt unexpectedly? I want an honest answer! Do not lie. I will detect if you lie.

Oh yes, I know I have to answer that first. And the answer is - I don't mind! Really, I don't mind and I can prove it! Just stay with me till the end of this post.

All this thinking about calling started yesterday when I had gone to the sweet shop. When I entered the shop, one man was paying the shopkeeper and shopkeeper, a young man of 20s called him Uncle. (He was a man of around 40!) He took a big objection to it! He even asked the children who wanted to buy something, to call the shopkeeper grand uncle!! I just kept looking elsewhere to stop myself from laughing in front of him.

In the other incidence, I went shopping with one of my friends. She knew this shop where they sell tops in very reasonable rates. Shopkeeper showed us many tops and started talking about them. He called me Bhabhiji (sister-in-law) and then suddenly stopped and asked if it is ok to call me Bhabhiji? I was a bit confused. I nodded my consent and looked at my friend. She looked a bit embaressed. I came to know the story afterwards. My friend had taken her other friend to the same shop once and the shopkeeper called her aunt! She was so furious with him that she gave a lecture to him for an hour! And did not buy a thing!

One day I was going on my bike and someone called me from behind "Hi Sasubai! (mother-in-law!)" The autowalas in Pune call you anything just to annoy you. Bahenji, Tai (elder sister), Bhabhiji, Aunt etc., is acceptable but Sasubai! That is too much. I was so angry; I just took my bike to the side of the road and looked back, ready to fight! But alas.... It was really my would br son-in -law standing in front of me, very frightened. (Would be son-in -law of my eldest sister! She is 13 years elder than me!! It has to be explained here. Or else you all would call me Dadiji and I will definitely not like that :-) ) Actually he is only 5 years younger than me and he had asked me if he should call me sasubai or something else. But I was insistent that he should call me sasubai only! I used to quarrel with my niece that she should call me aunt! (I was very young and naive that time!) That is why he was teasing me like that! We still laugh at the incidence.

So see I do not mind if anyone calls me anything as I have one grand daughter as well who calls me Aaji (grand mother!)! Isn't it good?!

What I am reading

I am going to write about the book I am reading. Yes I have read the 2ND book from Stephanie meyer's Twilight series-"New Moon". But that will come later. First I want to write about a very gentle, romantic book I have read. I am a big fan of romantic stories. So I read lots of Mills and Boon books. In these books I like Betty Neels more than others. But this is also not the subject of today's post.
So where ever I go generally I find a friend who is also an avid Mills and Boon reader. (Not at all a hard task!) We then share many books and talk about it for hours. (Better than gossiping!?) One such friend gave me this book. The condition of the book was not so good. It was not a Mills and Boon either. But she recommended this book so strongly that ignoring all my inner protests I started reading it. I completed the book in one day.( only 155 pages) I liked it so much. I shared that story with my comments with at least 5 more people including my Husband of course. I always bore him with my chatter. He is not always that patient with me. (Generally he ignores me.) But this time he heard with interest. (I don't know his interior motives.) I thought it impressed him as well. So I was very happy. I was even thinking of translating it in my mother-tongue.
The name of the book is "Letter From Peking". Name of the Author is 'Pearl S. Buck'. This book is self narrated story of an American woman 'Eve' , married to the Chinese man 'Gerald'. Her name is 'Elizabeth' but Gerald calls her 'Eve' as he quotes "Eve, you are my first love!"
The story starts in the year 1950 in the month of September the 25Th. On this day, Eve receives a letter from her Husband. The most awaited letter. But after reading half the letter, Eve can't read the letter and just keeps it in the secret place. She has a 'feeling' about this letter she can not explain. So she just keeps it half read. Thus the story starts with the mystery and unfolds the lives of Eve, Gerald and Rennie; their 17 year old Son. 'Baba' Is also an important character in the story. He is Gerald's Scottish father with the surname 'MacLeod'.
I liked this book very much as the conflict within the persons who have to deal with two different cultures of two different countries is portrayed very effectively here.Especially when they have to make difficult choices in their life. No harsh language, no controversy, no hard feelings are reflected any where in the story!
When we come to know about Gerald's mother and her conflict and the choices she made for her son; we perfectly understand Gerald for not leaving communist China even if he had a choice to leave. Rennie also have to make choices but as he has a strong mother and half the decision made by his father, he is able to do it with less inner conflict!
The character of Mei-lan comes as a surprise half way through the book. After reading Mei-lan's letter, Eve finally reads her Husband's half read letter. Even if Mei-lan is an unusual character and only meets us through her letters to Eve I liked her as much as Eve at the end of the story.
Many of us go through the identity crisis of different kind. This book showed me the most delicate and understanding way to solve that problem. I heard that Pearl Buck writes stories with Chinese culture backgrounds and she has written more books. So my project is now to find her other books and read them!

1 To 10 Of My Life

I have been tagged again by Shilpa ( On 3Rd Aug. But as I have mentioned before ( ) I am very bad with numbers.....Especially with Finance. And in this tag I have to give account of all my life in numbers. So it took me almost a week to summon up the list and fulfill this tag...

So here are the numbers in my life...

It must be my one and only daughter!
a href="">

This is the number of blogs I am trying to maintain! I have become a Blog addict!!

Number of sisters I have! All elder as I am the youngest one in the family...

Number of languages I have studied! 1) Marathi, 2) Hindi, 3)English, and 4)Sanskrit.

This is the No. I dreaded the most as after these many years I would be considered as middle aged! (I shouldn't have mentioned it! But this big mouth!! Just consider it 'not having said' or may be I am making some mistake in counting again....)

This is the number of family members. Without their support I am nothing! They are my husband, daughter, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, niece and sister-in-law.

This is the number of cities I have lived in.They are...Wai, Pune, Mumbai, Glasgow, London, Milton Keynes and Brighton.

The number I hate! Why? It is a long story...O.K....Long story cut short; to get a driving licence for a motor cycle there was a test I needed to complete. I had to drive the motor cycle in shape of number '8' using all the signals for turning, stopping, etc. by hand. I failed the test first and (until now) the last time in my life! I am so embarrassed of myself!! So I hate this number with all my heart!

I am very much related with this number as it is my birth date and my numerological number. (I am not a strict follower. It is just an information.)

And the last but not the least(literally...) the number ten!

These are the number of years I have been a parent to my daughter. My life had changed so much in all these years! I have learned so many things and I have matured a lot! (at least I think so!!)
That's it!! I have completed the task successfully and I have enjoyed it a lot! I think I like to do these tags after all! Thanks Shilpa!!
I am Tagging all these wonderful people-,

You all are invited to join this tag as well!

Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince

I have seen this movie on Saturday the 18Th of July. But I was kind of busy reading other reviews...well, I wanted to be perfect in writing this review! I wanted to write my over-all view about HP books and movies together and I was kind of busy to give it a proper time.. I think these many excuses are enough!(That will convince me enough!) Now I will go on with the review...
I kind of liked 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince'!The 'kind of 'represent that I did not completely like it.It is O.K.! I did not like it's end at all.I will rate it as 3.5 stars.I know it is because I have read the book first. So I expected much more from the film, but couldn't help it!
All the new characters-Narcissa Malfoy, Horace Slughorn,Cormac McLaggen,Young voldemort and Lavender are chosen and represented perfectly!I had a habit to compare the description of the character in book and the character in movie. Then I always associate that face with the character. So far they have chosen the star cast wisely. I liked the Dumbledore in first two movies better!

In this movie they have taken all the important incidences from the book with some modifications. The attack on Burrow was only for the 3D Imax effect with no significance. The scene in the cave when they try to get the Horcrux was the best scene in the movie. This movie was successful in creating the merry romantic environment the teenagers experience.

But why did they cut off the fight between the death eaters and the members of Order of Phoenix? Why they have to show Harry just standing there and watching Malfoy or Snape cursing Dumbledore when in book he was wordlessly immobilised under his invisibility clock by Dumbledore! For these two changes I did not like the movie!!
Why a movie based on a book is always unsatisfactory-
There is a huge difference in these two mediums of entertainment.Book is a long story and movie is long story cut short. In book you have to say all the things in words but in movie many things such as visuals, acting, drapery, background, music and even a silence speaks! So you should not compare movies to books. The movies based on the books are always unsatisfactory as it is the view and perspective of story of only a group of people and that could change vastly from person to person.
Many people thought the 3rd movie of Harry Potter i.e.Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the best of all.But I did not like the end of that movie as well.In that particular book Harry takes decisions first time in his life.Until this book he was as stranger as all the readers were. But in third part he totally understands his past and takes decisions. In movie all those decisions were taken by Hermione! Why they had to change that part I never understand.

In 5Th book three parallel wars were shown by J.K.One war was with Voldemort, one with Ministry of magic and one Harry fighting with Himself when he sees things from his father's past. The movie was total failure as it never gave that feeling of all three parallel fights. But this is only my view as I feel that is the worst movie of the 6.They should have made 2 films of 5Th book!!(actually from 3rd book only they should have done that!)

All said and done I am eagerly waiting for the 7Th movie!(Are they making 2 movies of the 7Th book?)
